curb appeal showstoppers
Your exterior always looks the same. Love it or hate it, changing your exterior is not as easily done as an interior room.
Add color with plants, shrubs and easy care trees.
I love driving around DFW looking at landscape. Season to season, a front yard can look completely different from spring to summer. Pops of spring color breathe life into the dormant brown grass right now. The Red Buds are usually the first signs of life in my neighborhood. This year, my knockout roses are taking an early turn in bloom.
Season by season, here are some of my personal favorites to awaken your curb appeal and keep your landscaping budget & time in check.
Spring
Texas Redbud (Cercis canadensis var. texensis): A small native tree that produces brilliant pink blooms early in the spring.
Carolina Jessamine (Gelsemium sempervirens): A twining evergreen vine that produces fragrant, bright yellow flowers. Birdies love them too.
Rock Rose (Pavonia lasiopetala): A tough, native perennial with pink hibiscus-like flowers that bloom reliably from spring through fall.
Petunias & Snapdragons: Ideal for annual beds to provide immediate color early in the season.
Summer (these are hearty guys who can withstand our heat)
Lantana (Texas Native): Clusters of red, yellow, and orange flowers that attract butterflies and thrive in full sun.
Turk’s Cap (Malvaviscus arboreus): A tough, heat-loving perennial with bright red, hibiscus-like flowers that attract hummingbirds.
Zinnias: A wide range of colors that handle Texas heat well and continue blooming into fall.
Pentas: Star-shaped blooms in white, red, lavender, and pink that bloom all summer and are favorites of pollinators.
Orange Rocket Barberry: Offers vibrant orange foliage during the summer months.
Fall
Fall Aster (Aster oblongifolius): A low-maintenance native perennial with vibrant purple blooms that last late into the season.
Mexican Bush Sage (Salvia leucantha): Offers beautiful, velvety purple spikes that thrive in fall.
Copper Canyon Daisy: Known for its vibrant yellow blooms and fragrant foliage, providing a final burst of color.
Dwarf Burning Bush: Provides a dramatic, scarlet-red color transformation in the autumn.
Winter
Ruby Loropetalum (Chinese Fringe Flower): A versatile shrub with deep purple evergreen foliage that keeps its color year-round, accented by pink blooms in spring.
Red Yucca (Hesperaloe parviflora): A structural succulent with deep green or blue-green leaves and coral flower spikes that can appear even in winter.
Pansies & Violas: The go-to annual for winter color, lasting from fall through early spring.
Winter Honeysuckle: Offers early, fragrant blooms when few other plants are active.
